Back when we were deciding on topics for our story of now I remember I originally was thinking about doing it on college debt. However, after talking to Madie I ended up getting really excited about the topic of heteronormativity. I don’t even remember how we chose it, but it was something that we both easily agreed on. Heteronormativity isn’t even something that I’ve thought of up until recently because it’s something that is so engrained in us at a young age. For me, heteronormativity is a really important topic. The fact that people are automatically assumed straight until proven otherwise is something that I hope will eventually change with society. I think with the growing acceptance of the LGBT community society might eventually get to a point where people don’t have to come out anymore, and when judging someone else’s relationship with someone else you just judge them by their quality of character and not their gender. Our biggest focus ended up being on baby clothes, because I find it interesting how sexual norms are perpetuated before we are even able to talk and understand what is going on around us. Heteronormativity is a pretty far-reaching topic, and there were a lot of other things that I would have liked to include in the video. I am a huge fan of Dragon Age and I am really impressed with how progressive Dragon Age is compared to other video games, and I would have loved to talk about it, but I realize that it really didn’t fit in with the scope of the film, and I think it was the right decision to cut it out. At first I was nervous that I was going to come off as awkward on camera, but I’m glad people reacted well to it. And I had a fun time filming it too! I really like how the interview footage of us turned out visually. As much as it’s hard for me to watch myself on camera I’m really glad that we decided to come into the studio to film it because we were able to adjust the lights on the wall as well as using the light equipment. We had some trouble with getting some of our footage because we ended up getting in trouble the second time we went to film at the mall, so we couldn’t get general shots of people walking around. Since there was some footage that we were unable to get we had a bit of a rough time in the editing room deciding how to do transitions for something, but ultimately we decided to do transition title screens and I think that those worked real nicely. Overall, I am pretty happy with this project. I had a lot of time working on it, and had a lot of laughs in the editing room, and I got to think extensively about an issue that I care about.
